The coat of arms for Pope Francis is nearly identical to the one he used as archbishop, notable for its simplicity. Following in the steps of Benedict XVI, he replaced the triple crown with a triple miter, symbolizing the Pope’s three missions to teach, govern and judge. Behind the miter are the crossed keys of St. Peter, one gold and one silver, united by a red string. The coat of arms itself features a blue background with a sun at the top center. Inside are three letters symbolizing the Jesuit Order, IHS, with a cross on the letter H and three small nails underneath the letters. On the lower left is a star representing the Virgin Mary, and on the lower right is a branch of the tuberose flower, representing St. Joseph, the patron of the Universal Church.
